Batesville is the county seat for Independence County. Norman Crampton lists it in his nationwide guide, "The 100 Best Small Towns in America". It serves a five country trade area of approximately 100,000 depending on the market being measured.
Independence County and Batesville have low unemployment rates that are usually below the national and state level. We are fortunate to have several large employers located in the area.
Retail sales continue to rise as do the number of vehicles registered in the County. Sales tax receipts continue to rise throughout 2002 and were $3.8 million for Independence County and $1.04 million for the City of Batesville.
The tourism industry is an important part of the area's economy with 352 jobs tied directly to it. Tourism generated $452,577 in local tax receipts in 2001 with over 140,000 visitors to the area.
Batesville and Independence County continue to grow at a steady rate.
